CELL BIOLOGY - TOPIC 1
Cells
-
-
Bacterial Cells
dont have a 'true' nucleus but a singular circular strand of DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm
-
Sub-cellular Structures
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Rigid cell wall
made of cellulose, it supports the cell and strengthens it
chloroplasts
these are where photosynthesis takes place, making food for the plant
contain a green substance called chlorophyll, which absorbs the light for photosynthesis
permanent vacuole
contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts
-
Cell Differentiation
Differentiation
as cells change, they develop different sub cellular structures and turn into different types of cells to carry out specific functions
most plant cells never lose this ability but animal cells do at an early stage, after specialisation
-
Examples include:
-
-
-
-
Xylem and Phloem
Xylem and Phloem cells make xylem and phloem tubes which transport substances such as food and water around plants
xylem cells are hollow and phloem have very few sub cellular structures, so stuff can flow through them
Stem Cells
Diseases
embryonic stem cells can be used to replace faulty cells in sick people like insulin-producing cells for diabetics
-
Where?
-
Adults also have stem cells but only in the bone marrow which can turn into certain types of cells, like blood cells
Plant stem cells
in plants, stem cells are found in the meristems. Throughout the plant's entire life, cells in the meristem tissues can differentiate into any type of plant cell. So, they can be used to produce clones of whole plants quickly and cheaply
They can be used to grow more plants of rare species or to grow crops of identical plants that have desired features for farmers
Cell Transport
-
Osmosis
the diffusion of water molecules from a region of higher concentration to one of lower concentration, through a partially permeable membrane
in plants, water enters the cell by osmosis when it has lower water contents than the solution it is in
Diffusion
where particles from an area of high concentration move to one of a low concentration to spread evenly
