C7
Hydrocarbons
hydrocarbons only conbtain hydrogen and carbon eg c10 h22
alkanes have all c-c bonds
the simplest hydrocarbon with the set structure of Cn H2n+2
they are homologous or react in the same way
alkanes are saturated compounds-carbon forms four bonds
the first alkanes are methane ethane propane butane
the properties of hydrocarbons vary on many factors
the shorter the chain the runnier it is
shorter chains have lower boiling points
shorter chain means it is more flammable
Fractional Distilation
Crude oil is made over a long time
it starts when fossils and plankton are drilled with high temperature and pressure
they are non renewable and we are using them quicker than we produce them
fractional distillation is used to separate hydrocarbon fractions
the oil is heated until it is turned to gas
the column has a temperature gradient hot at the bottom cooler at the top
the longer hydrocarbons have higher boiling points the hc's with higher and lower points at the bottom and top effectively switch later on
