Human Activity intentionally causes change within coastal landscape systems
SANDBANKS & POOLE BAY, DORSET
Why?
-
-
Poole Harbour
Clear entrance must be maintained for ferries, commercial ships and catamarans
-
Sea level rise could cut the peninsula off from the mainland resulting in £18m in damages to residential properties alone
-
Management Strategies
Groynes
100 wooden groynes at £100,000 each
-
-
-
These groynes at Sandbanks prevent sediment from entering harbour entrance, absorb wave energy to reduce erosion. They also allow the beach to build up by sediment accumulation
Beach Nourishment
2005-2008, 1.8 million m^3 of beach material
A dredger was used to pump sand shore and was then levelled by bulldozers, dredging - £3/m^3

Impacts
-
Impact on Landscape
Groynes create wider beaches by trapping and allowing for sediment accumulation. In the future this could 'advance the line' as the process is sped up and sediment builds up continually
Rock groynes become colonised by plants, such as algae and lichen, followed by other lifer forms such as limpets and crabs. This shows the ecological benefits and increased diversity of sea life.
