IMMIGRATION CRISIS
CAUSES
-
- The gang violence and increasing homicide rates in many Central and South American countries are huge reasons for the large surge of immigrants. People are no longer safe in their home countries and are searching for stability elsewhere.
- Another cause of this immigration crisis the United State's ignorance of its neighboring countries in need. Building a wall is not a real solution. If the government were to provide assistance to neighboring countries, immigration would significantly decrease.
- The Northern Triangle, which consists of the countries Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, has incredibly high poverty rates. In Honduras, 61.9% of the population live below the poverty line. Poverty is a large cause for immigration as it drives people to leave their homes in search of a new life.
- Vulnerability to national disasters is also a large cause for immigration. El Salvador and Guatemala are among the 15 countries most at risk for natural disasters. People risk losing their belongings, homes, and lives.
- Crop failure is another cause for immigration to the United States. Due to climate change and long-lasting droughts, many Central and South American countries are losing essential crops such as coffee. This leads to famine and economic stress.
- Many of these countries also have a highly corrupt government with terrible mismanagement. A corrupt government leads to many political, social, and economic problems which can drive people to immigration.
- Another major cause of immigration was job shortages in Central and South American countries. Thousands of people were out of jobs and, mixed with rising taxes, were in a difficult economic situation. Many of these people chose to immigrate to the United States in search of jobs and steady wages.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
-
- The government could also make sure that all families have access to legal counsel. This has been proven to increase the chances of people showing up for their court cases and provides immigrants with the legal protection they deserve.
- The government could consider providing substantial support to Central and South American countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. This assistance would help with the root cause of migration thus also decreasing the problems in the United States.
- New policies could be created where immigrants are able to apply for visas or asylum while still residing in their home country. This would help decrease the number of people being detained in camps and allow more immigrants to cross legally.
EFFECTS
- Thousands of families are being separated at the detention centers. Minors are being detained and mothers are being torn away from their newborn children. There are thousands of children in the detention centers who will never see their parents again. This immigration crisis is growing a broken generation.
-
- These detention centers have incredibly unsanitary and inhumane conditions. Cells meant to hold 35 people are being used to hold more than 155. ICE officers are no longer distributing basic hygiene products such as toothpaste because they feel it isn't necessary. People are being forced to live in animal conditions which is a huge violation of human rights. As a result, hundreds of people are dying due to infections and diseases.
- There is a huge number of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. Since immigration has become such a terrifying thing, many people are desperately attempting to cross the border illegally. Even if successful, undocumented immigrants are unable to register for important needs such as Social Security benefits and Medicare.
