Parasympathetic innervation to the submandibular glands is provided by the superior salivatory nucleus via the chorda tympani, a branch of the facial nerve Preganglionic parasympathetic nerves leave the brain stem with the facial nerve (CN VII) and run with the chorda tympani and the lingual branch of CN V3 to the submandibular ganglion.
Postganglionic parasympathetic nerves travel either directly to the submandibular gland or back to the lingual branch of CN V3 to the sublingual gland.
