Evaluation of the approaches
cognative approach
N- no strong standpoint- nature internal thought processes, nurture- schemas dev. through experiences
Scientific?- Yes lab experiment + brain scans
Useful?- Yes REBT, EWT, cognative development e.g schools
I- no, Nomathetic- applies generalised theories to all
R- mechanistic reductonism
D- deterministic, schemas? stereotypes can determine behaviour
biological approach
Scientific?- Yes, scientific research, PET scans, controled exeriments
I- nomathetic, making generalisations about people and find similarities. Doesn't consider individual differences. looks at few people and generalises to all
N- nature, focuses on biology. Doesn't consider real life situations that may impact mental health
Useful?- Yes, effectively treat mental health disorders with drugs
D- determinist, behavior is predispositioned by brain function. :) treat people with abnormal behaviour before it gets too serious
R- reductionist, behaviour isa ONLY influnced by brain function. approach doesn't consider distress experienced
behavourist approach
N- nurture, conditioning environmental impact ( ignores possible genetic influences)
Scientific-?- Yes, operationalised behavious and feelings, scientific explanation
Useful?- Yes, aversion therapy, SD, connditioning in schools
I-
R- reductionist, complex behaviour reduced into simple 'stimuli-respomse' relationship
D- determinist, behaviour is influenced by associastions with stimuli. ( doesn't consider thought process, can people be held responsible for their actions?)
psychodynamic approach
N- nature+nurture, personality is a product of innate drives(nature), and chilhood experiences(nurture) e.g psychosexual stages
Scientific?- Not really, but many of Frued's theories can't be proven wrong
Useful?- Yes, childhood+ critical period in development, psychoanalysis(mental health disoreders), help understand mental heald disorders
I-
R- holistic+mechanistic reducationist- human behaviour is influenced by multiple factores. symptom subsitition, however, also simplfies complex behaviour and ignores factors like genetics and biochemistry
D- determinist, no free will. excuses behaviour('I can't help the way I am), can people be held acoutable for their actions?
