Chi-boy
Chi-boy is a very tall teenager who is running the patrols, he is very skilled at it. He is also in love with Wab.
Slopper

Slopper is a 9 years old kid who is considered as overweighted, he accidently heard a story whe he was 7.
Miig
Wab is the oldest girl of the family so her role is to lead. She is beautiful but has a scar that crosses her face and goes down to her chest. Her secret comes out one day that she has been sexualy abused when she was young.
Riri
Riri
Riri is a little 7 years old girl who lost her mother and is now with miig's family, she is not allowed at the beginning to hear stories.
Mitch
Miig is the father figure of the group.He is the one that everybody listens to. He is the one who tells stories and that educate and prepare the kids to be independent.

Frenchie is the main character of this book, a sixteen years old indigenous boy who lost all his family members and that is now forming a new family with the people he met. Frenchie is learning a lot with his new group, he is learning to hunt but he still misses a lot his family. When Rose arrives in the group, he immediately falls in love with her.

Frenchie is found by a small family leaded by Miig, that will become the father figure of Frenchie.

The story takes place in a world where climate change is now a major problem, the recruiters are chasing Frenchie and after hiding in different places, his brother, Mitch, decides to sacrifice himself for Frenchie to reach the North where he would be safe.

A lot of characters in the story have lost few or all of their blood family members. But, they all find a new one with Miig and the whole book shows the importance of family, and having models to follow so you develop yourself.
environement
The whole story is related to the climate change, if it wasn't of this natural disaster, non-indigenous people wouldn't lose their ability of dreaming and their crave for indigenous marrow. So, the message that we can learn from this theme is that those who respect the environment (indigenous people in the book) are the only ones who the environment respects back. Contrarily to non-indigenous people in the book who suffers from the consequences of their actions and that make everyone around them suffer to even if they aren't responsible of it. :

For Miig's Familly, for indigenous people, it is crucial to conserve traditions and to keep the stories going through generations and generations.
