Pterygoid Process & Maxilla
Contents
Medial & Lateral Pterygoid Muscles
Maxillary Artery
Trigeminal Nerve
Chorda Tympani
Glossopharyngeal N
Pterygoid Venous Plexus
Communications
Orbit, through IOF
Nasal Cavity through PT Fossa, PT Fissure, & Sphenopalatine foramen
Middle ear cavity through squamotympanic fissure
Relationships
Auricotemporal Nerve
Runs posteriorly & exits behind TMJ
Buccal N
Passes between the heads of the lateral pterygoid
Lingual & IAN
passes between Medial & Lateral pterygoid
Lingual N
runs anterior & superior to IANB
Chorda Tympani
Joins posterior edge of lingual nerve
Nerve to Mylohyoid
from posterior edge of IAN
Maxillary Artery
crosses over the lateral side of the lateral Pterygoids forehead
Muscles of Mastication
Temporalis
Originates from side of the neurocranium & temporals fascia;
inserts onto coronoid process of mandible
Innervated by deep temporal N.
Elevates & retrudes mandible
Masseter
Originates zygomatic tubercle and arch; inserts on angle of the mandible. Innervated by N to masseter; both superficial & deep parts elevate mandible
Medial Pterygoid
Originates on medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate; inserts on angle of mandible; innervated to the n. to medial PTerygoid; elevated and protrudes mandible
Lateral Pteryfoid
Superior head inserts on TMJ Capsule & disk. Inferior head inserts on neck of mandible . If paralyzed on one side the chin deviates to paralyzed side
