lymphatic system
-
formation & constituents
lymph is formed from the
intestitial fluid
so lymph as it enters the terminal
lymphatics has almost the same
composition as intestitial fluid
rate of lymp flow
2-3 l /day
-
lymphatic capillaries
endothelial cells of lymphatic capillaries
-is attached to the surrounding tissue by
anchoring filaments
-edge of 1 endothelial cell overlaps the edge
of the adjacent cell
in a way that the overlapping edge is free to
flap inward
forming a valve that opens to the interior of the
lymphatic capillary
-intestitial fluid can push the valve open & flow
directly into the lymphatic capillary
fuctions of lymph
1,return the proteins from tissue spaces
into blood
2.redistribution of fluid in the body
3.removal of bacteria,toxins &
other foreign bodies from the tissues
4.maintenance of structural &
functional integrity of tissue
5.intestinal fat absorbtion
6-plays an important role in immunity
by transporting lymhocytes
-
is a network of small organs(lymph nodes
& tubes(lymphatic vessels
through which lymph(a fluid derived from intestitial fluid
flows
-is a clear colorless fluid that circulates through the
lymphatic system
-lymphatic system acts as a secoundary circulatory system
-its not a closed system, like the circulatory system
but an open system & has no central pump
