Since the ocean levels have risen, the people have to move from the coastlines and go towards the fresh water in the middle of the continent. The people have to fight for the fresh water and the indigenous people have to fight for their territory.
The government wants to extract the dreams from the bone marrow of the indigenous people. The government wants assimilate them to Canadian culture.

Family
Family is very important in this novel. From the beginning, when Mitch saves Frenchie from the recruiters, towards the moment when Francis finds Miig's group and gets accepted as if it was his own family. They live through a lot, but they live it together as a family.
Chi-Boy : Tall, great at hunting, does exactly what Miig tells him to do
Warmer temperatures and earthquakes have majorly changed the landscape and the weather of the Earth
Indigenous community
Indigenous people are being targeted for political and cultural reasons. Political reasons because of their emplacement in the continent and cultural reasons because of their ability to dream.
Survival
Survival. This is the situation where everyone is. They are all fighting to survive. From the Indigenous people, to the people from the coastlines towards the Recruiters. Everyone shares one same aspect and that one aspect is survival.
