Research Essay Peer Editing
Traditional Assignment: Students bring in printed copies of their essays to be passed around and reviewed by their peers.
Problem: Students forget to print copies of their work.
Problem: Students do not submit completed essays.
Problem: Because work is usually not seen by the teacher it is sub-par.
Problem: Peer edits are lost by students before essays can be revised.
Problem: Peer edits are usually not reviewed by the teacher.
Problem: Peer edits not completed in class may never be completed.
PeerMark Assignment: Students submit essays to Turnitin and use PeerMark to review each other's essays.
Solution: Because peer edits are stored on Turnitin, both students and teachers have access to the reviews. This allows students instant access to their essays while also allowing teachers the ability to view and monitor any feedback a student may have received. This also allows the teacher to step in if any comments left on the essay could be construed as overly aggressive.
Solution: Because peer edits are stored on Turnitin, students can always find a copy of their peer edit on Turnitin's website. Teachers are also able to download an email or print copies for their students.
Solution: No printed copy is needed when using PeerMark. This assures that every student has an essay ready to be reviewed.
Solution: Teachers are able to view student essays before they are peer edited to assure that they meet the requirements of the assignment.
Solution: Knowing their teacher also has access to their work often encourages students to put in more effort than they may otherwise.
Solution: PeerMark allows students to complete work online, which will allow them to take home student essays and finish their peer edits without fear that those essays will get lost or held for too long. Students have instant access to those essays when they are completed and teachers are able to monitor progress on peer edits.
PeerMark Perks
Question Bank: The question bank has several pre-loaded questions teachers can choose from to help guide their students through the peer review process. Teachers are also able to create their own questions and save these questions in groups for specific assignments (much like QuickMarks).
Distribution: Student essays can be randomly distributed by Turnitin or students can select the essays they review.
Note: Teachers used to be able to select the essays students reviewed, but this option seems to be gone.
Self-review: Students are able to do a self review with the same guided questions.
Anonymity: Teachers can choose to make reviews anonymous so students do not feel pressured or anxious during the review process. Teachers are still able to see who completes each review in case any problems arise.
Missing Work: Students who do not submit essays are still able to participate in the peer review process at the teacher's discretion.
