Three theoretical approaches
The systemic approach
This is a way of acting, thinking and viewing the world, which focuses on relationships and recognizes that individuals are always embedded in their social context.
The comparative historical approach
Over time, relationship patterns both enable and limit processes of development and change. In practice, this means that problems in families are always part of larger processes.
This implies that individuals cannot act entirely on their own, either for good or bad.
Change in one part of a relational pattern, or system, can be expected to create adjustments throughout the family and immediate context.
The rational choice approach
Rational choice theory states that individuals use rational calculations to make rational choices and achieve outcomes that are aligned with their own personal objectives.
These results are also associated with an individual’s best, self-interests.
Using rational choice theory is expected to result in outcomes that provide people with the greatest benefit and satisfaction given the choices they have available.
