AS Unit 1 - Hardware
PC Conponents
Motherboard
Main circuit board of the computer, contains the mounts for the CPU, RAM and Dedicated GPU and the ports for the computer
CPU
Central Processing Unit, performs core functions of a computer like arithmetic, controlling all the other components and peripherals
-
Intergrated GPU
A GPU that is built into the motherboard and uses less power and produces less heat but has worse performance
Dedicated GPU
A expansion card that fits into a PCI slot on the motherboard, they presents the user with better graphics than an integrated GPU and have their own cooling system
SSD
SSD (Solid State Drive) use direct access to the data on the magnetic plate. Unlike a hard disk drive, there is little to no deterioration over time as there is no physical movement of a spinning disk.
HDD
Hard disk drives are a spinning magnetic plate that data is written to and read from using an arm with a head that can read or write. As the disk spins, data is written and read so the faster it spins, the faster it can be done.

Proccessor Performance
Clock Speed
The speed at which the fetch-decode-execute cycle can operate is known as the clock speed.
The number of times the cycle occurs in 1 second is the clock speed of the processor in Hz
Cache Size
Cache memory is able to provide data and instructions to the processor much faster than other types of memory
More cache memory means the processor is likely to be faster
Cores
A core is the processing unit within the CPU
Therefore if a computer has multiple cores it can process multiple instructions at the same time
However, a dual core processor is not necessarily twice as fast because one instruction could rely on the result of another to be processed
-
Cloud Storage
Data is stored on servers somewhere in the world and can be retrieved via the internet and is dependent on the speed of the internet
