        How
        
        Teacher dedicates class time for students to create a tech use contract. The contract should state clearly what is and is not appropriate tech use behaviour in class. It should be displayed in a visible place in the classroom.
        
        Rationale
        
        Group contracts encourage students to be active in setting appropriate expectations for group interaction.The contracts can help promote ownership of learning. (Hesterman, 2016, p. 5). It helps establish a healthy classroom culture around technology use.

        Agreed Tech Breaks
        
        How
        
        Students working uninterrupted for 15mins on their schoolwork before allowing for a short break to use technology.
        
        Rationale
        
        Students would be able to extend their focused working time as they continue to practise working uninterruptedly for a certain period of time.
        
        Personal Experience
        
        Aa G10 students who has Attention Deficit Disorder has started taking tech break during learning support lesson. It is in an agreement with the student and the teacher that he can gain a 5mintue break for every 20 minutes of work he completed in class. A timer is placed on his desk to keep track of time. The student reflected that he managed to stay on task for a extended period knowing that there will be a break at a specific time.
- - - - Listening to Music while studying
        
        Positive
        
        When the task requires creative thinking, a moderate level of ambient noise can be beneficial (Mehta, Ravi, et al, 2012)
        
        Rationale
        
        Moderate music encourages abstract processing by increasing processing difficulty in our brain. It increases the workload in the brain and thus increase our ability to find creative solutions.
        
        Negative
        
        When the task requires absorbing and remembering new information, listening to music can be harmful.
        
        Research Evidence
        
        A study shows that participants who listened to any music while memorising a list performed worse than those who studied in silence or listened to a single word repeated constantly (Perham, N. & Vizard, J., 2010)
    - - Doodling during teacher lecture time
        
        Research Evidence
        
        Doodling does not complete the cognitive resources required for listening to instructions. It also discourages daydreaming by adding resource load to the task. (Smallwood el al., 2007a)
        
        Personal Experience
        
        The Grade 11 students were given some scrap paper for doodling while listening to a broadcast related to their history unit. While some students agreed that the doodling had helped them stay focus, some of them were distracted by their own drawing and were not able to keep track of the content of the broadcast.
        
        Reflection
        
        Doodling can be a useful tool helping students to manage their distraction. While teachers should allow appropriate doodling in class, the activity should be monitored and make sure that it has not become counter productive.
