Earthquakes
-
Mapping Earths Interior
-
A seismometer measures and records ground motion and can be used to determine the distance seismic waves travel
-
- find the arrival time difference
- FInd the distance to the epicenter
- Plot the distance on a map
Seismic Waves
- Primary waves also called P-waves cause particles in the ground to move in a push-pull motion similar to a coiled spring they move in an accordion movement, fastest moving wave, first detected after earthquake , weaker, travels through solids and liquid
-
- Secondary waves, also called S-waves, are slower than P-waves. They cause particle to move up and down at right angles relative to the direction the wave travels Perpendicular movement (snake), slower moving wave, only travels through solids
- Surface waves cause particles in the ground to move up and down in a rolling motion, similar to ocean waves-- wave-like motion, slowest moving wave, gemerally causes the most damage
-
what are Earthquakes
The vibrations in the ground that result from movement along breaks in Earths lithosphere. These brakes are called faults
