Treatments of cancer
chemotherapy
attacking cancer cells also results in attacking normal cells. Reason for hair loss in chemo treatment patients
defined as chemicals that are; ingested, injected, or taken internally.

classes of treatment
alkylating agents
suppress bone marrow treatment, can cause anemia and a weakened immune system.
nausea, vomiting, hair loss
-
-
antimetabolites
oral sores, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, hair loss, general weakness
mimic nucleotide bases during DNA replication, not allowing it to be copied
-
-
topoisomerse
cause fever, fatigue, poor appetite, general malaise
prevents topoisomerse during replication, preventing replication and cell division
mitotic inhibitors
hair loss, muscle & joint aches, oral sores, peripheral neuropathy, as well as numbness or tingling in hands / feet
binds to cell machinery needed for mitosis, prevents cell division
-
radiation
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
multi-beam options use two intersecting beams of radiation to give cancer the highest radiation exposure while limiting that which is received by surrounding tissue
surgical options
-
-
-
palliative surgery is used when there is pain, but a typical surgery is not an option because of location of tumor or other factors
-
immunotherapies
-
-
checkpoint inhibitors: don't allow body to stop over production of T-cells or the rate they mature / reproduce
-
-
combination therapies
-
each treatment has its own weaknesses that can be compensated for through the use of a secondary treatment
-
adjuvant: chemo or radiation used after a surgery to kill remaining cancer cells that were not removed
using chemo or radiation before / after surgery depends on likelyhood that lingering cancer cells are localized

Types of cancer
-
connective tissue
-
soft tissue sarcomas
originate in fat, nerves, blood vessels, and muscles

sarcomas

-
may cause bone pain, breaks, and under skin lumps
