Wireless Mode Technologies
Modes
- in which an RF transceiver of a wireless network adaptor can be configured
Basic Service Set (BSS)
- BSS configured access points provide point-to-point fixed-point wireless bridging to a wireless network.
Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS)
- It is an ad-hoc mode that allows other wireless nodes to connect together without the use of an access point.
Extended Basic Service Set (EBSS)
- is a grouping of two or more BSS stations and their wireless nodes to form an extended wireless networking arrangement
Network Structures
Ad-hoc Wireless Network
Peer-to-peer
- allows roaming wireless devices to communicate directly with eachother and to connect with other wireless devices within its range
May not use intermediary access points
not as secure
Infrastructure Wireless Network
Centralized security
Better operating range
This is a
fixed-based mode
in which a wireless network operates. In this mode, the wireless stations remain in a fixed location and establish wireless connections to an access point.
Scalability
Personal Area Network (PAN)
-
encompasses a personal operating space (
POS
) -
1-10m
in all directions around a person
network that exist around a single user
Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET)
-
a
wireless network for mobile devices
self-created
when roaming wireless devices are connected over a wireless link
Roaming
Roaming devices are able to
move about freely
, connecting and disconnecting with the network at random
Seamless roaming
is used by cellular telephones
Nomadic roaming
is used with WLAN devices
