ERQ 4: Contrast treatments that are linked to etiologies based on biological, cognitive, and sociocultural theories on the origins of the disorder.
Intro
Restate LO: There are different treatments based on biological, cognitive, and sociocultural theories of the disorder.
Terms
-
Etiologies: Etiologies are reasoning behind why people suffer from particular disorders. This can be analysed through theories with different perspectives, which include biological, cognitive, and sociocultural theories of the disorder.
Biological theories focus on the genetic and physiological aspects of behaviour in disorders. Cognitive theories focus on the mental processing of individuals with different behaviours. Sociocultural theories focus on how groups affect the behaviours of individuals.

Aim
-
Alprazolam is typically used for short term management of anxiety disorders such as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), but it is commonly used for PTSD as symptoms are similar to that of GAD.
Method
A random-assignment, double-blind crossover trial. Both researchers and participants have no idea of their participation in the study when the study takes place.
Methodology
10 patients (aged 19–56 yrs) fulfilling the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) criteria for PTSD completed 5 weeks of treatment on each agent.
Findings
Core symptoms of PTSD were not significantly altered, although patients' health slightly improved during alprazolam treatment.

Evaluation/MAGEC
Strengths
Method: Patients who participated fulfilled the DSM III criteria for PTSD. This means the diagnoses of patients were standardised, leading to greater control of variables in the study.
Method: Placebo was also used to increase control in the study, as it allows more explicit results in the causation between alprazolam treatment on PTSD symptoms rather than a correlation.
Method: Double blind procedure was used. This reduces researcher and participant bias as both parties do not know of their contribution to the study.
Limitations
Method: Only 10 patients who ranged from 19-56 years participated in the study. The age gap is very large among a limited number of participants, which suggests that the results of the study may not be generalised to any particular age group.
Method: The time frame for PTSD treatment was very short. Results may not be significant as compared to a longitudinal study as PTSD symptoms can have long term effects, which is not significantly observable within 5 weeks.
