'Religion within the bounds alone'
Kantian Ethics is a restatement of the religious teaching of,
'Do what you would do onto others onto yourself'
TODAY SOCIETY/ANALOGIES
Today society as we bridge further away from a religious society we see more problems/circumstances come up in which were not an option during Kant's period this makes it hard to agree with as we currently break down our religious background laws then to rebuild an legalistic humanistic based society
Analogy of
Conflict of Duties
, so whether to lie to save your friends life or to not lie due to it being wrong and against your duty
Idea that
GOOD WILL + DUTY = MORAL ACTION
- Scenario of a disabled person that has good will but struggles to complete duty - Where would you categorize a person in that section?
I AGREE
Summum Bonum = Highest Good
Categorical Imperative
Strengths
If you follow Categorical Imperative it forces you to always at towards the good so it will always point that way
Reasonability
- Outlines main ideas
most
people have about the idea of morality
Weaknesses
The Categorical Imperative is a strictly
ABSOLUTIST
theory which means it must be applied for everything but this would be perfect if the real world was actually like that, but it isn't. This is shown for by the
lack of account for emotions
as well as when
two duties contradict themselves
this leads to the Categorical Imperative not helping out in a normal situation as you are stuck between two.
Kant said he was trying to stay away from the idea of God but again bases his theory on the
3 postulates
which are 3 basic assumptions that must be accepted but they aren't always especially the idea of God.
No proof of immortality or God
Hypothetical Imperative
would be a better alternative but it would be more options and that could in a way make it harder
Not everyone has
freewill
Some ideas are
subjective
e.g Beauty
Formula 2 - Capitalism
- Whole society in Capitalism is based on idea on building upon other people work and using people to make money. In this sense this should go against ones duty but it is the only
Duty to
YOU AND SOCIETY
These can clash
