Social classes/class structure (1918-24)
The Season
London Season became a market for marriage for the upper class
People wanted to attend high media coverage events like the Proms and the Chelsea Flower Show
It became an annual event and Queen Charlotte's Ball was the most important event in the social calendar
There would be a Lords cricket test match and a boat race
In May, King George III had a ball
Queen Elizabeth did debut introductions at royal garden parties
Fabulous balls and parties took place
People would return to London for the hunting
This was for the upper class and formed 200 years ago
Decline of the upper class
Liberal Party introduced a tax where anyone who earned over £2500 a year saw their tax rise from 2% in 1914 to 57% in 1925
Death duties for the rich went up, anything over £2m was taxed at 40% of the value
20.7% of all Old Etonians died in the conflict and 19% of all peers died
1/4 of all the land in Britain was sold off by the rich between 1918 and 1920
Due to WW1, many rich people who were high up in the army died
Changes after the war
People in the working class may have gone up to the middle class
The benefit here is that there would be a reduction in income inequality
People in the middle class may have gone up a class
Since many rich people died during the war this meant this would change the social class structure
Burke's Landed Gentry
Richest families retained their land
Others saved part of their land by starting businesses and investing in the stock market
By 1937, 1/3 of the gentry had no land left and this was down to half by 1951
Influence on politics declined
40% of MPs were gentry in 1910
Published every year and gave a list of all the gentry
By 1945, only 5% were MPs in 1945
