What Sets the ISL apart from all other Swim competitions
Team related differences
Swimmers: In each event, all the clubs competing must line up two athletes and also two teams in each of the relays. Each team is allowed only 24 elite swimmers unlike any other competition. 12 girls and 12 boys with a support team that can be up to 32 workers.
An MVP is selected after each match and at the end of the season. The criteria for such selections are the number of points towards the team score, that the swimmer has accumulated during the match and the season respectively. Each time, only one MVP can be elected and can be both a woman or a man.
Randomized lanes: This is one of the most controversial terms of the ISL. Lanes are not determined by speed. Some people hated this, some people loved it. One of the most crucial components to the team based race that ISL is pushing so hard much, much easier to follow. Randomizing the lanes provides a fair and fun race.
Race differences
Skins race: A skin race is a series of back-to-back races, operating on a knockout basis: the two swimmers that advanced to the last round, race each other in a head-to-head final race. Skin races’ rounds are held every 3 minutes and the athletes must return behind the blocks after each round.
2-3 minutes between races: 2-3 minutes are held between each race to give the swimmers enough time to recover and warm down during races while keeping the race going in a fast and efficient manor.
No distance races: No distance events for fans of endurance races. Although the two-hour allotted time proves to be a hindrance, not featuring an 800 freestyle immediately reduces the value of a swimmer such as Katie Ledecky, one of the best swimmers in the Female league. This format glitch is unfortunate, as an 800 freestyle can be enjoyable, especially when a legend like Ledecky is racing.
How to win
Negative points: Relays still score double points than individual events. But now, order to keep a fast pace during relay events, if a team is slower than certain times determined by the ISL, they receive a penalty of 2 points from the actual points the team’s place refers to. They will also receive negative points for disqualification.
Prize money is given to each team:
$ 10000 per swimmers in winner Club at Final Match
$ 5000 per swimmers in second-placed Club at Final Match
$ 3000 per swimmers in third-placed Club at Final Match
$ 1000 per swimmers in fourth-placed Club at Final Match
per point in Final Match (per swimmer)
per match attended (per swimmer)
per match attended at Final Match (per swimmer)
$ 300 per point in regular season matches
Prize system: A points system – awarding from 6 down to 1 point for the top four athletes in each event has been created to establish how the prize money should be divided (relays score double points, skin races score triple points).Based on how many points an athlete scored and on how many matches he attended, the prize money can further increase if his team has qualified for the Final Match.
