Cell Division - Meiosis
-
2 stages of Meiosis
1 - chromosome number is halved with one member of each homologous pair in each new nucleus / at each pole of the cell
-
-
(2) Prophase 1
-
Centrioles (when present) move to opposite poles of the cell and organise the polymerisation of microtubues which radiate out to form a spindle
-
-
(3) Metaphase 1
-
-
-
Independent Assortment
Each homologous pair consists of a maternally derived chromosome and a paternally derived chromosome
-
-
-
-
-
-
(7) Metaphase 2
Centromeres attach to spindle fibres, which move the chromosomes to the equator
-
The chromosomes line up separately on the equator (as sister chromatids are no longer identical due to crossing over - independent assortment occurs again)
