Cell Division - Mitosis
The cell cycle
-
-
3 - Cytokinesis
-
In animals
Contractile proteins for a ring and shorten pinching in the plasm membrane forming a cleavage furrow (outside in) until 2 cells are formed
In plants
Golgi vesicles containing cell wall material aggregate then meet at the equator of the cell - moved by spindle fibers
Forms a cell plate which develops from centre outwards until it extends across the cell forming two cells - membranes of the vesicles form plasma membranes of the new cell
Stages of Mitosis
1 - Prophase
-
-
Centrioles are present in animal cells - pairs separate and move to opposite ends (poles) of the cell
Protein microtubules form, radiating out of each centriole forming a spindle from pole to pole
-
-
-
3 - Anaphase
-
-
The spindle fibres shorten pulling the centromeres separating the chromatids to form two chromosomes

Significance of Mitosis
-
-
Growth
-
-
Animals
-
occurs during growth and to replace damaged, warn out and dead cells in mature tiddues
-
Cancer
-
-
-
Cancer is more likely in tissues that repair frequently e.g. gut lining, endometrium
