self-esteem- is the part of the self-concept that involves the evaluation of self-worth. self-esteem involves the way we communicate and how people view us.

along with heredity our identity is shaped by communication with others. the term reflected appraisal describes how we develop an image of ourselves from the way we think others view us

although with messages from others your own assessments shape your self concept. This occurs thought the process of social comparison. social comparison is evaluating ourselves of how we compare with others

culture and self concept. cultures affect our self concept in both obvious and subtle ways. example most western cultures are highly individualistic means they value individually and independence.

self-concept and communication with self-concept shapes and is shaped by much of our communication behavior. for example, the self-concept you bring to an event the one element of your self-concept is nervous with authority figures the image probably comes from the evaluation of significant others in the past perhaps teachers of former employers.

the self-fulfilling prophecy and communication. the self-concept is such a powerful force that it can influence our future behavior and that of others. a self-fulfilling prophecy occurs when a person expects of an outcome and subsequent behavior makes the outcome more likely to occur.

culture and social influences- culture provide a perceptual filter that influences the way we interpret the simplest events. this filter extends to sex and gender roles, occupational roles and relational roles.

sex and gender role social expectations about masculine and feminine behavior have a powerful influence on our identity and how we communicate.

occupational roles- the kind of work we do also governs our view of the world.

relational role- for example, the role of the parent as most new mothers and fathers will attest having a child atters the way they see the world. the roles involve in romantic love can also dramatically affect perception these roles have many labels partners, spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend and so on

common perceptual tendencies shared narratives may be desirable but they can be hard to achieve some of the biggest obstacles to understanding and agreement start from errors in interpretation or what scientist call attribution. attribution is the process of attaching meaning to behavior.

perception in mediated communication. mediated communication offers fewer cues about others than you get in face to face interaction. the ability to edit a message before posting makes it easy to craft an identity that doesn't match what you would encounter in person.

narrative perception and occupation- you might blame an unsatisfying class on the professor who you think is a long-winded bore. on the other hand, the professor characterizes the students as superficial and lazy and blames the class environment on them. social scientists call this created personal narratives to offer a framework for explaining behavior and shaping future communication the stories the children in blended families tell about their stepparents both shape and reflect how they feel about them

empathy perception and communication

empathy is the process of creating another person's pers[ective.to experience the world from another person's point of view. sympathy is compassion for another person's situation. perception setting is a three-part method for verifying the accuracy of interpretation including the description of the sense-data two points interpretation and a request for confirmation of the interpretation.

perceived self- is a reflection of self-concept.you self is the person you believe yourself to be in moments of honest self-examination. in contrast, the perceived self is a public image the way we want to appear to others. in most cases the presenting self we seek to creates a socially approved image. diligent student, loving partner, loyal friends and so on.

face- the socially approved identity that a communicator tries to present

facework- is the verbal and non verbal behavior designed to create and maintain communicators face and the face of others. face work involves two tasks. managing our own identity and communicating.
