Research into lying has a long and rich history in developmental psychology as it is thought to provide a window into many aspects of children’s minds, including intelligence (Binet, 1896), theory of mind (Chandler, et al., 1989), moral understanding (Piaget, 1965 [1932]), personality and character (Hartshorne and May, 1928), and children’s competence as witnesses in courts of law (Goodman et al., 2006).
