Birth - 6 months
By 1 month old babies are already showing feelings through expressions. By 3 months old they will show pleasure when given attention
6 months - 1 year
By 6 months babies may show distress when their main carer leaves. By 9 months old they are beginning to display their likes and dislikes. They often need a comfort toy or blanket to help them cope
1 - 2 years
By 12 months old moods tend to change quite quickly. Babies are still dependant on their comfort toy and like to have reassurance from an adult. By 18 months old they are easily frustrated. They alternate between being clingy and rejecting help
2 - 3 years
By 2 years old children can express how they are feel but often have tantrums when they are misunderstood. They are becoming more independent but can often be clingy. at 2.5 years old they may show signs of jealousy of other children
3 - 5 years
By 3 years old children are developing a sense of morality, and they understand and follow rules. They start to have best friends and show affection to other. By 4 years old they show increasing sensitivity towards others. They understand right from wrong
5 - 7 years
By 5 years old children show sympathy to others and begin to understand the concept of fairness. By 6 years old children are beginning to compare themselves to friends and developing their self-image. By 7 years old they are more able to control their feelings
Emotional development is about how children develop their sense of self, their feelings towards themselves and others, and how they cope with their feelings
