Cosmological Argument

Aquinas
-
-
2nd way - causation
-
the chain of cause and effect being traced back to infinity is impossible to Aquinas - leads to the question 'What was the first cause?' - for Aquinas, this was God
If there was an infinite chain of causes, there would be no first cause to start the process
There must be an uncaused cause, which causes everything to happen without itself being caused by something else
"there is no case known in which a thing is found to be the efficient cause of itself; for it would be prior to itself, which is impossible"
-
"it is necessary to admit to a first efficient cause, to which everyone gives the name of God"
3rd way - Contingency
-
-
-
"if everything is possible not to be, then at one time there could have been nothing in existence"

Criticisms to Aquinas
-
the second law of thermodynamics states that everything eventually collapses into chaos or decay - challenges way 1 and contradicts stable form of order
-
Kenny argues that it is not necessary for X to be brought about by X - fire can be caused by friction - challenges conclusion (multiple explanations)
Quentin Smith - electrons can pass in and out of existence without any apparent cause - challenges way 3
BBT - proof that universe is of random chance - challenges multiple conclusions as theists believe God caused the universe
-
Kant says that reason only works for the world of senses and God is beyond the grasps of the five senses
