The Marrow Thieves
coming to story (Frenchie): his brother, Mitch, sacrifices himself to save Frenchie from the Recruiters
Frenchie finds his way into a group trying to survive together. The group ranges widely in age, from seven-year-old RiRi to the group’s Elder, Minerva. Miigwaans, or Miig, leads the group.
Together, the group travels on, trying to evade capture, moving further and further North.
As soon as Rose enters the family, Frenchie loves her immediately.
Miig explains with Story that the ability to dream was somehow stored in the Indigenous people’s bone marrow, and the government began to construct new residential schools where the marrow was forcibly extracted.
One night, Lincoln and Travis are with the group, but it turns into a nightmare for their family. Lincoln chokes Riri and they both fall of a cliff. After, Frenchie decides to kill Travis for a sort of revenge.
Frenchie finds Dad, and accuses him for not trying to look for him and Mitch.
After Minerva's death, Rose decides to leave the group. Frenchie hides so he doesn't have to say goodbye, reasoning that he should be happy with the family he's found with Miig and Dad. Dad still gives him permission to go after Rose to build a future with her
Right after Rose and Frenchie reunite, Isaac comes back, and he and Miig are finally back together.
Frenchie: He was separated from his brother, Mitch. He loves his new family, but he's still scared about his parents' absences. He becomes like a big brother to Riri especially. He becomes an important member of the family quickly. After Rose's arrival, he really begins to believe he has to fight because they're is a future for him. After Riri's death, Frenchie really questions himself, and ends up killing Travis for betraying them.
Wab: She grew up in a situation of violence and abuse. She was left with many scars which is a constant reminder of the violence and trauma that she experienced because of who she is as an Indigenous person.
Miig: He's the father figure of the group. He was married to a man, Isaac, and they were both put in a residential school, but Miig managed to escape. He does everything he can to protect his family. Miig is a great inspiration for all the younger indigenous he is raising; he helps them to become independant.
Minerva: She is the old lady of the family. Her role in the group was really underestimated until she sacrificed herself to the recruiters in order to save the rest of the family.
Riri: She is a happy kid. She knows that she's living in danger, but isn't really aware of the real situation. She learns to grow up, but she gets thrown off a cliff by Lincoln, which ends her life.
Indigenous knowledge: The indigenous community are trying to keep their own culture which is getting taken away by the non-indigenous people.
Theft: The indigenous people run away from the recruiters because they want to keep their bone marrow in order to dream. The recruiters take the indigenous people away into the schools where they will take away their bone marrow.
Humans and nature: People who need to survive with no permanent home. They need to stay together and move around so they don't get caught by the recruiters.
Indentity: The indigenous people know their culture, their past and they are aware of what their identity and their bodies mean for non-indigenous people. They are extremely valuable and constantly at risk.
