Enzymes

Genes (in nucleus)
–> make proteins (including enzymes) (in ribosomes)
–> which catalyse reactions (in cytoplasm)

Process

The substrate attaches to the active site
=> lowers the activation energy of the reaction
=> products formed more easily and leave the active site
Also: multiple substrates attach to the active site
–> reaction takes place and forms larger molecule(s)
–> product leaves active site
Lock and key model:
– one key only fits one lock
– one substrate fits one active site
=> enzymes are specific

Stem Cells
Stem cell: a cell that has the ability to divide many times by mitosis while remaining undifferentiated. Later, it can differentiate into specialised cells.
Two main types:
Embryonic stem cells: found in the early stages of development in the embryo – can differentiate into any type of cell
Adult stem cells: found in certain adult tissues, have lost the ability to differentiate into any type of cell but can form a number of specialised tissues
