In some chapters, the elderly tells their stories to the young adults so that they can learn from their errors and nto redo the same mistakes.
He is Frenchie's brother, he protected Frenchie from the Recruiters by sacrificing himself. We do not know much about him.
He is the second eldest, he teaches how to hunt and how to survive to the younger ones. He values equality and altruism. He was friends with Frenchie's dad before the apocolypse.
Minerva
Minerva is the Elder of Frenchie's family. She teaches Cree to the younger people in the camp. Miig states in the book that everyone underestimated Minerva when she sacrificied herself to the Recruiters. We learn in the book that when she sings in Cree, she is able to burn down a whole school. She is proud of being Indigenous.
Chi-Boy
Chi-Boy is unusually tall and the oldest boy in Frenchie's family. He rarely speaks however we discover towards the end of the book that he is in a relationship with Wab. Frenchie's admires Chi-Boy's skills and calm behavior.
Rose
Rose is new in the group. She is super sttuborn and knuckle-headed. She fantasizes about rebellion and respects elders. She defended them numerous times by telling other that elders are important and that we must value and respect them.
Wab is the oldest young girl in the family. She is in charge of the domestic charges but she mostly likes to do everything herself. People describe her as distant and quiet. She has an enormous scar that goes from the top of her head to her chest and goes over one of her eyes. She experienced serious trauma so that is why she is closed off to others.
Riri
She is a young girl that makes everbody smile! She is super curious and wants to know about everything, but Miig protects her innocence by not telling her the stories too soon like he did with Slooper
Important Events
The family discovers the four winds
Recruiters find Mitch
Frenchie killed Travis. Travis and Lincoln, indians, killed Riri. They were traitors working for the recruiters
More about Frenchie's psychology
Frenchie is the main character. He travels with Miig and other childrens. He learned how to use the hunting rifle and the bow and arrow to go hunting. Also, even though he is around people, he is surely very scared by the abscence of his parents and brother Mitch. He is protective of Riri, as he takes on the role of a big brother to her. He refuses to tell her the " Story" until Miig deems it necessary to avoid traumatizing her. Even though he starts to join Miig and Chi-Boy into guilding the group, he is still a child. He respects his elders and try to mimic their habits and movements. He is slowly becoming an adult. In the end, Frenchie learns to accept his indigeneous identity and come to terms with his past failures, for exemple, not being able to rescue Riri.
Slooper
He is a 9 year old kid that had suffered severe trauma when he heard Miig's story. He spends a lot of time with Riri and loves food
Travis and Lincoln ( Post page 160)
They are antagonists in the book. I was super upset when they shot Riri, an innocent kid. Dying so young is always terrible. They try to justify their actions by blaming it on drugs, but , in my opinion, it is still unacceptable.
Predictions
I think that Frenchie might die trying to protect everyone, but ultimately will be for the greater good
Frenchie finds a way to destroy the schools and will take down the Recruiters and government.
Frenchie attempts to escape Canada. Maybe even without his family?. ( My less likely to happen prediction)
The Environnemnt
Climate change is horribly affecting the world in the novel. Sea levels have risen which changed permanently the coastlines. The oil industry has contaminated most of the freshwater sources. The temperature is also warmer and multiple earthquakes shattered the earth. All these factors severely changed how the world looks and it's weather. Cities became places where poverty is omnipresent and even small things like electricity is not always available. In short, it's a though world to live in.
I forgot to mention the multiple violent effect of the climat in the novel like by emxemple at page 87: «The earth was broken, Too much taking for too damn long, so she finally broke. But she went out like a wild horse, bucking off as much as she could before lying down. A melting North meant the water levels rose and the weather changed. It changed to violence in some cases, building tsunamis, spinning tornados, crumbling earthquakes, and the shapes of contries were changed forerver, whole coasts breaking off like crust.»
