Differentiated Strategies for Cell Structure & Function Pre-Assessment Danielle Meehan
5 students who answered most of the questions correct on pre-assessment
Have students to look at all of the structures they’ve labeled and begin to discuss together what role those structures have in the cell.
Begin to add definitions and functions to labels on additional paper or google doc
Provide additional unlabeled diagram of plant cell
Have students label and describe the different structures found in the plant cell.
Have students come up with similarities and differences between plant and animal cells.
Formative Assessment:
Groups will share their diagrams and google docs with teacher and explain what they've learned
Daily Warmups will continue to be pictures of cells, that students will label and describe in google classroom
Student groups will share out anything they learned that was new to them or interesting.
Pair higher achieving student with lower achieving student and have them work together
12 students who have some knowledge but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Provide students with additional unlabeled diagram of plant cell
Have students brainstorm and discuss what would be different about a plant cell : and why
Provide definitions and vocabulary to students and see these help students reason out what any previously unlabeled parts may be.
Watch a video about the difference between types of cells and what makes them different
Formative Assessments:
Continue warmups where teacher displays pictures of cells and students make observations and notes in google classroom
Share out observations and new and interesting ideas to class and teacher
Exit Ticket: Question: What would happen to a cell if you removed the nucleus?
5 students who appear to have limited knowledge of topic
3 students struggling with English language acquisition
Immediately provide students with vocabulary lists and allow them to translate if needed.
Introduce vocabulary list that has pictures alongside the words to help better explain the function and structure
Introduce video about the topic with transcript available for translation.
Pair students with someone with stronger English skills that also speaks native language
2 students need to be tested for special needs
Pair higher achieving student with lower achieving student and have them work together
Provide a graphic organizer to help structure the activity
Provide a copy of diagram with some of the labels and definitions partially filled in.
Provide vocabulary list at start of activity.
