Interesting Locations in Southeast Asia and East Asia
Borneo
Borneo is the third largest island in the world. It is located in SE Asia.
The island contains three countries - part of Indonesia, part of Malaysia and Brunei.
They economy depends on agriculture, logging, oil, gas and tourism.
Demand for palm oil, which is used in many, many products around the world including shampoo and lots of food is leading people to burn down large parts of the rain forest to grow this crop.
Demilitarized Zone, Korean Peninsula
It still exists today because tensions still exist between the two Koreas and North Korea remains an adversary to much of the world.
The demilitarized zone is located between North Korea and South Korea at the 38 parallel.
Interestingly, what was first farmland and then a deserted war zone as now turned into natural habitat because no one lives or goes there.
It is a buffer zone set up after World War 2 when the governments couldn't come to an agreement.
Hiroshima, Japan
This bombing along with the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, caused great death, economic damage and ongoing health problems. It changed how most of the world felt about nuclear weapons.
On August 6, 1945, this was the first city in the world to be hit by atomic bomb.
This city is located at the head of the Hiroshima Bay in Honshu, Japan
Today Hiroshima is the largest industrial city in Japan with production of steel, rubber, cards, chemicals, ships and is even the headquarters for Mazda.
Himalayas
They include Mount Everest which is the highest peak in the world.
The Himalayas are the third largest deposit of ice and snow in world.
The Himalayas include eastern parts of China and parts of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bhutan and Nepal.
They serve as a natural barrier to migration of people.
While we think of the cold mountains, there are areas of the Himalayas that are more tropical which provide areas where people can live.
Tokyo, Japan
It's economy is based on industrial, commercial and financial businesses. It is also where things are distributed to the rest of Japan and the world.
Tokyo is the is Capital of Japan and located at the head of the Tokyo Bay on the Pacific coast.
It is one of the most populated cities in the world and the political, economic and cultural center of Japan.
Singapore
It is the largest port in SE Asia. It is one of the world's largest ports.
It's location at the tip of the peninsula set it up to be a perfect port location for trade in SE Asia.
Singapore is a city-state found at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.
It has few natural resources. The economy relies on its role in trade between other countries and on the financial business.
Mekong River, Southeast Asia
The Mekong River is the longest river in SE Asia, the 7th longest in Asia, and the 12th longest in the world.
It forms borders between many countries and runs though many others. These include Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It enters the South China Sea in Ho Chi Minh City.
Many people rely on the river for food and jobs. Agriculture is the main role and rice is the main crop.
Great Wall of China
30% of the Great Wall has deteriorated over time. This is concerning for China because they will lose tourists. They are working to save the wall.
Now it serves the economy of China as a tourist attraction.
It was started being built over 2300 years ago. It was build for protection of people and trade routes.
It is located in Northern China and is over 13000 miles long.
