Themes
Equality
This story addresses the topic of racism. This issue is still something that our society suffers from. The people from different races are treated differently like the indigenous are in this novel. They were treated like animals and this is not okay. We should have more equality in our present system, so as the system of the book, in wich the indigenous are chased for their marrow. We should appreciate more the differences and be happy for each other.
Indigenous people
This novel is the story of indigenous people being chased, kidnapped and targeted for their bone marrow. Migs is an elder who told everyone about the indigenous past and he called that Story. We also learn more about their difficult past and how they survived racism, oppression and how they survived residential schools. The writer wanted to reflect on the way Europeans treated them and how they completely stole their culture. She also wants for indigenous people to be proud to be who they really are.
Family
The group formed in this novel is as tight as a family. All those children and adults have been disconnected from their biological family. They have, all of them have had something traumatizing happen to them and they all connect because of that. This group is the best family they'll ever have.
Climate change
This story takes place in the depths of the climate change. We are currently living in a destructing way for the planet. Our environment is slowly degrading because of us, the humans. This book addresses our current environmental situation by showing what our future could possibly look like if we don't make something about it. It shows that because of the humans, it will eventually be the end of the world, and our chances of living our contaminated world are really small.
