Chemical Analysis
Gas Tests
Ammonia – NH3
-
Has a sharp, pungent smell
Carbon dioxide – CO2
Bubble through limewater, turns cloudy,
forms white precipitate – CaCO3
-
Hydrogen – H2
Collect in a test tube, apply a lit splint
– gas ignites with a squeaky pop
Water – H2O
Pass vapour through anhydrous copper sulfate crystals
– turns the crystals from white to blue (hydrated)
Cool and condense the vapour,
test with anhydrous cobalt chloride paper
– paper turns from blue to pink
Anion Tests
Add a small amount of nitric acid, then add silver (I) nitrate solution
-
Br-
Cream precipitate – AgBr – insoluble in dilute ammonia, soluble in conc. ammonia
-
Add a small amount of HCl,
then add barium chloride
-
Add dilute HCl,
bubble any gas through limewater
-
Ion Tests
Flame test: – add a few drops on conc. HCl to the compound in a watch glass.
Press a clean wire loop into the paste.
hold in the hottest region of a roaring Bunsen flame
