POETRY
"In The Beginning" -Mark K. Tilsen: Tilsens use of animal references embodied the cultural and symbolic aspects of the movement. He concludes the short powerful poem by bringing power to the movement and the present, "the camp is waking up"
"Resolutions"- Layli Long Soldier: This two sided style of poetry is found poetry. It makes the reader really think as she used two different pieces of texts, paralleled them and created poetry to embody the movement of Standing Rock and the relationship of Natives with Americans.
"Death of Hydra"- Joel Waters: Another powerful poem contained two lines that spoke volumes for Standing Rock. "Its time to fight oil for water. Its time to fight oil with blood."
"At Standing Rock" - Karenne Wood: The structure of this poem was almost song like, or prayer like. A conversation was poetically created with one bold, eye-catching statement that in itself could be its own poem. "They were praying together" the first essential line draws the connection of the veterans that stood at Standing Rock with those who inhabited the land.
"Witness"- Trevino L. Brings Plenty: This unusually structured poem makes for a challenging read with the wide line breaks, but the message is clear. It is putting blame and calling out the police who stand at the front line or those who cause violence and pain upon the Standing Rock protestors. An almost sarcastic or daunting tone encourages them to reflect on their actions.
"Water Is Life: A Poem For The Standing Rock" - Demian DineYazhi: This poem was intentionally speaking to an audience, the speaker cries out his regret and dismay for not being side by side the people at Standing Rock. This message is one a lot of people can assimilate too, but also one more easily understood by those who are standing at Standing Rock. It could be used as motivation to keep going and fighting for those who wish they could.
"Prayer of Prayers"- "It is the ferocious flower left behind
left behind by a rubber bullet
blossoming on the face
of a woman"
These four lines are very powerful and embodying of the central point of the poem. Prayer is powerful enough to fight violence, this is a redefinition of what prayer means to the people of standing rock. The element of nature and attribution to a woman is essential points to be noticed in these lines as they also encapsulate the movement.
WOMEN
"TallBear: “Badass Indigenous Women Caretake Relations: #Standingrock, #IdleNoMore, #BlackLivesMatter” in SWSS": women are the center of the movement.
"Dhillon: “’The Fight Has Become My Life, and It’s Not Over’: An Interview with Zaysha Grinnell” in SWSS":an interview with a 15 year old prominent voice in the Standing Rock movement. She talks about the life of a woman on the camp, the sexual abuse, and the struggle to embody the footsteps of their ancestors.
Estes: “’They Took Our Footprint Out of the Ground’: An Interview with LaDonna Bravebull Allard” in SWSS": An interview with Lodonna. Her name quite literally means "Her good earth woman". She preaches about the youth suicide rate and the detrimental state of the camps.
"Latimer: “Lessons from the Land: Peace through Relationship” in SWSS": "Her body a weapon of protest"
"INDIAN"
"10 WAYS TO BE A GENUINE ALLY TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES": This article is almost essential to human interaction. It is a guide on how to be a good ally to indigenous communities especially in the prevalence of these recent speaking up and out of indigenous communities when usually the media shuts them out.
"Indigenous Ally Toolkit": This PDF provides helpful definitions on what exactly an Ally is. It also speaks to how indigenous communities feel about alliance attempts, and how they wish to be pursued. This is helpful because it provides no excuses for people to be lazy in their pursuit of ally ship and respect.
"Indian"- Robert Warrior: "Indian is a word that has deep and conflicting roots in the Western Hemisphere and in the contemporary imaginations and attitudes of those who live in the Americas.
VETERANS
"Veterans Stand Ground With Pipeline Protesters At Standing Rock | NBC News": This quick visual overview of some of the veterans who packed up their things, said goodbye to their usual day to day lives, and went to live on Standing Rock and support those who need support from people of the outside, not physical but emotional.
"These veterans explain why they went to Standing Rock": Another quick clip of the veterans who picked up and went to Standing Rock as they speak on their decision and what they've taken away.
"Veteran Service Corps Featured by Citizen Truth": This article overviews the relationship between Native Americans and the veteran corps. They talk abut the history of Native Americans in the troops along with the newfound publicized relationship between the two.
MUSIC
"Stand Up/ Stand N Rock": This motivational and very catchy song showed every positive aspect of Standing Rock. They utilized celebrity support for momentum and created a conversation from their music that is sure to carry on.
"Prolific the Rapper x A Tribe Called Red - Black Snakes updated": This music video was more violent, or hard hitting. The words are powerful, the tone is serious, the images are inspiring a war zone depiction. The video definitely sparks controversy and conversation.
ART
"How Art Immortalized #NoDAPL Protests at Standing Rock"- Kara Weisenstein: This article was an interview on the creators of a documentary on Standing Rock called RISE. It was a dive into the experience the creators had, alongside their motivation and inspiration for the film.
"Long brings NoDAPL message to life in photos"-SCOTT MCKIE B.P.:This article speaks about a talented photographer who uses her keen eye to make powerful images out of human beings that speak up for the people and communities that have infrastructure and development threatening their water.
