Maxine Hong Kinston, The Woman Warrior Kinston tells the story which is fundamentally about those who do not belong or are not accepted. Kinston feels that she is an imposter in America, the No Name woman became an outcast in her own home, Fa Mu Lan actively sought a place in the world which was said to belong only to men. We see deep themes of self hatred and the feeling of being an impostor. Themes of being an outsider are also brought up in The Reluctant Fundamentalist, but in that case they are motivated by disgust of America, rather than here, where they are primarily motivated by shame.
