Biodiversity
Habitat Loss
Q- What is fragmentation?
A- Division of a large habitat are into smaller areas. Affects the amount and type of species that live in smaller areas.
Alien/ Invasive Species
Q- Why are they a problem A- Results in loss of biodiversity and damage to an ecosystem
Air Pollution
What is air pollution? Chemical substances and particles released in the atmosphere, mainly by human activities
What causes it? Burning fossil fuels
What is water pollution? Chemicals in water, wetlands are a natural filter
What causes it? #1 source is run off.
What is acid rain? Air pollution causes rain to become acidic
How does it form? Air pollution
Overpopulation
Over exploration
What are some problems associated with human overpopulation? deforestation so animals lose habitats, over hunting and fishing
What is it? Basic overuse of animals and land that leads to a decrease on pollution
What problems are associated with it? Harvesting species faster then they reproduce causes extinction
Pollution
What is biomagnification? Increase in concentration of substance as it moves up the food chain
How did biomagnification affect the bald eagle? Because it was the last organism in the food chain so it got the highest concentration of toxins.
Climate Change
What are 5 affects? Decline in cold adapted species, Melting of glaciers, Coastal flooding, Heat related health problems, Drought and water shortages
Preventing biodiversity
What is sustainable use? Use of natural resources in a way that meets needs of the present
What are umbrella species? Species that, if protected, also provided protection to other organisms.
Why are they Important? Can have a snowball effect on protecting other animals
