Restorative Justice Final (What is justice really? What does our own view…

- - - - Arose in the late 20th century as primary criticism of the growing prison industrial complex.
      - The idea that prisons cannot be reformed, they need to be eliminated, because they currently operate the way they are intended to.
      - ideas around police violence, the system is broken, we can make it better by reforming it. Prison abolition says nah, thats how its supposed to work, so if you want to get rid of those things you have to get rid of prisons.
  - - - Crime is messed up obviously, bad things happen to good peopple and thats terrible and something should be done about it
      - We send people to prison to be punished, to prevent them from doing bad things again and to detter others from doing the same thing. Punishment, corrections, detterrence
      - We view prison as something very external to society, afterall there are literal walls between them and society capped with razor wire watched over by people with guns, however, most prisoners are eventually released and millions are released each year. Todays prisoners are tomorrows neighbors, so correction should be the most important piece of that pie, however, it is not
      - Unfortunately, we treat punishment as more important and are too good at it. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world and over the last 30 years that number has skyrocketed, increasing at over 400%. Furthermore, our prisons violate international humanitarian standards, practices that would otherwise be considered to be torture.
      - Long prison sentences have helped to decrease crime, but no more than 25% of the decrease that we've seen can be attributed to incarceration, and its costs far outweigh the benefits.
      - The political move is to appear tough on crime because crime is scary, and we want to appeal to our voters who are scared of it. As a result, policy has increased prison population, but this is just bad policy. It's cruel, it's short sighted, and to continue this policy on mass incarceration would be foolish for both societal and economic implications. Policy makers are just starting to realize the failures of this but there is a long way to go.
      - Restorative justice is needed to pull us out of a system like this, but the reason to its lack of political favor is because of its difficulty existing under the current policy
