The Marrow Thieves
Plot (major events)
-
They are all moving North, running away from the recruiters (throughout the book)
Mitch gets kidnapped by the Recruiters and gives the time to Frenchie to hide. He saved him. (We also learn through the first pages how the mom and dad got kidnapped too)
Rose, the new girl, arrives...Frenchie definetly has an eye on her.
Frenchie is sitting in a tree overthinking and suddenly he sees a moose. He looks deep into his eyes and decides not to shoot and let the moose live. I feel like it is a major event because even in the darkest time of his life, the time where he needs to survive, Frenchie will choose to have a heart for others than for him..
Frenchie comes across Wab who's drunk and talking about how horrible her mother was. She tells the boys, Rose, and Miig her coming-to story. (resume:a group of men raped her for two days)They discover that RiRi has been listening and is hysterical and afraid. Miig says it's time to tell her Story.
All the gang break through a fence to spend a few nights at the Four Winds resort. There, Minerva tells the girls the story of the Rogarou..
Rose crawls into Frenchie's bed (the night at the resort) and she tells him her "coming-to" story. After that, they start to kiss, but Riri and Slopper interrupt them.
-
Travis and Lincoln camp with Miig’s group, and they end up holding the family at gunpoint in the middle of the night. Lincoln chokes RiRi and races away with her. Frenchie follows Lincoln, Miig, and Rose, and discovers that Lincoln and RiRi fell off the edge of a tall cliff. He runs back to the clearing and shoots Travis. They pack up and run for days to escape the Recruiters, crying and grieving as they go.
the van driver shoots Minerva before they can carry out their plan. She dies in Rose, Miig, and Frenchie's arms after telling them to always go home.
-
The Council begins piecing together all the things they know about their language and their stories, and creates a youth council to pass on the knowledge.
Settings
-
- The Great Lakes were polluted to muck.California was swallowed by the ocean just like the rivers and bays. Then, the towns.
They are mostly in the forests, it's better a better place to hide from the recruiters and to find animals to eat.
- Since the North is melting, there is more rain

Themes
Dreams
Dreams are a huge part of the book, because the Natives are the last ones with this capacity and the Recruiters are trying to steal their marrow because it is where the dreams are preserved. Without the capability of dreaming, you can possibly die or kill yourself, because it is a psychological need. Also, dreams are a big part of Native culture.
Membership
Membership is also important, because belonging shows who you associate with and what kind of person you are.
Family
I feel like family is a theme, because everyone is considered family if they stick together. Just like the Natives.
Tradition
Tradition is a theme, because in Native culture they have quite some. Like telling stories is a big part of it. It is a way to keep the memories going from one generation to another. "It's time for Story".
Survival
The Natives have to do everything to survive. From material to family, they will do anything. First, they had no room for extras in the camp so everything did double duty (ex: pillow case was stuffed with clothes). Now, on the family side, we know that Mitch sacrificed his life so that his brother could survive. They also have to learn how to survive alone like how to hunt, to make food or to hide.
Everyone is trying to survive. The recruiters are hunting the Natives, because if they loose their ability to dream, they will die or kill themselves, because as a human dreaming is a psychological NEED. So they are motivated by the need to be able to survive and they see that solution in the Natives.
