Pathophysiology
Various metabolic disorders results in inadequate iron delivery to bone marrow or insufficient iron use within the marrow

Occurs when iron stores are depleted, when the demand exceeds the supply and develops slowly
Iron contributes to immune function by regulating immune effector mechanisms (T-cell proliferation, nitric oxide formation, cytokine activities)
