- - - - The Western Front was one of the most important battlegrounds during World War I. It involved the greatest number of troops, the heaviest fighting and the most casualties. More than 295,000 Australians served from 1916 to 1918 and were involved in 29 battles during that period. Between 1916 and 1917, little gain was seen from either side. During 1918, the German army launched a large offensive. The allied forces combined infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft to finally gain ground, with Germany surrendering on the 11th of November 1918.
- - - - The Gallipoli operation cost 8,141 Australian deaths and 26,111 Australian casualties. No military value was gained during the eight months of fighting. However, Australian and New Zealand troops displayed courage, endurance and mateship throughout the ordeal and became known as the ‘Anzacs’. The Anzac legend and spirit was born during the Gallipoli operation as Australian troops showed resilience and courage throughout the campaign.
