Chemical Bonds
Covalent Bonds
-
When electrons are shared unequally, or the electrons spend unequal time in each atoms outer valence shell, the result is a polar covalent bond.
When the electrons are shared equally, or they spend the same amount of time in each atoms outer valence shell, the result is a non-polar covalent bond.

Ionic Bonds
The transferring of electrons, or the loss or gain of electrons, to gain stability
When an atom gains electrons, it now has a negative charge.
When an atom loses electrons, it now has a positive charge.

-
Anion- Negatively charged ion, or gained electrons
-
Cation- Positively charged ion, or loss of electrons
