3.3a Networks and Topologies
LAN
Local area network, smaller area, Operates at higher speeds due to the signals traveling a smaller distance, therefore giving them a low latency (delay).
Advantages
: shared resources, log onto any workstation, cost savings, centrally made backups, centrally installed software.
Disadvantages
: expensive to set up, viruses and malware, network failure.
Ring
Forms a ring for signals to travel around. Faster than bus, fewer collisions, transferred data quick, data only flows in. If any device is faulty or main cable fails, the whole network will fail.
Bus
Each computer and network are connected to a single backbone or cable.
Cheap does not require any expensive equipment, easy to add computers.
Advantages of a dedicated connection (compared to ADSL)
Faster download speeds are usually available
Faster upload speeds
Connections that don't slow down at peak times
Greater reliability
Better support
Disadvantages of a dedicated connection (compared to ADLS)
Cost
Longer wait
WAN
Wide area network, wider area, Operate at slower speeds as the signals travel further and taking more time giving a higher latency (delay).
Can connect geographically over other countries
Advantages
: They enable LANs to be connected together, they enable shared data between LANs, allows workers to collaborate even if they are geographically far apart.
Disadvantages
: Can be expensive, sometimes things go through the wrong cables or central server on the WAN that (network failure)
