Phlebotomy Ch.8: Lecture 2
Colored Tubes
Red(glass)
allow 30 minutes to clot
no additives
serum specimen
Tests: chemical(glucose), Serology(rubella), Blood bank
Red (plastic)
clot activator
serum
Tests: Chemical, Serology
Do NOT use on blood bank testing
Light blue
Sodium Citrate, anticoagulant
plasma
Tests: Coagulation tests, PT (prothrombin)
Make sure to fill tube to the correct level to maintain 9:1 ratio of blood.
Lavender
additive: K2, K3, EDTA; anticoagulant
whole blood
Tests: CBC (complete blood count), Hemoglobin
Pearl
Additive: K2, EDTA, plus gel
plasma
Tests: Viral loading
Gold Hemograd closure (red/gray stopper)
Additive: clot activator/thixotropic gel
serum
Tests: Chemical (glucose or BUN)
The tests are also called SST's, or serum separation tubes
Gray
Additives: sodium fluoride or iodoacetate to preserve glucose
may be combined with potassium oxalate or heparin to be an anticoagulant
Serum or plasma
Tests: Fasting blood sugar/ alcohol levels
Black
Additives: sodium citrate; anticoagulant
whole blood
Tests: ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate)
Make sure tube is filled to the correct level to maintain 4:1 ratio of blood to anticoagulant
Green
Additive: Heparin; anticoagulant
plasma
Tests: Stat chemistry (glucose, electrolytes, and ammonia)
Light green or green/ gray stopper
Additive: Heparin/Thixotropic gel
plasma
Tests: Stat chemistry tests; glucose, potassium, BUN
Tube referred to as a PST or plasma separation tube
Orange; yellow and gray stopper
Additive: Thrombin; clot activator
Serum
Tests: Chemistry tests when serum is required on pts with anticoagulant therapy
The tube will clot the blood in 5 minutes
Royal blue
Additive: Heparin/ EDTA or none
plasma or serum
Tests: Toxicolgy trace metals, lead
This tube is specifically cleaned and has special stoppers to prevent specimen contamination
Tan
Additive: Heparin
plasma
Tests: Lead
Tube contains less than 0.1 microgram/ ml of lead
Yellow (sterile)
Additive: SPS(sodium polyethanol sulfonate) to inhibit complement and phagocytes; keep blood from clotting
whole blood
Tests: Blood culture to recover organisms that cause blood infections
Yellow (non-sterile)
Additive: ACD (acid citrate dextrose)
Whole blood
Tests: paternity tests, tissue typing
dextrose nourishes and preserves RBC's
citrate is an anticoagulant
Pink
Additive: K2, EDTA
Whole blood or plasma
Tests: Blood bank compatibility testing and antibody screening
This tube and lavender meet the label standards for the blood bank
Order of draw
Blood culture tubes
yellow sterile
to prevent cross contamination from others
Light blue tubes
for coagulation tests contamination from other additives that can interfere with testing
Red (glass/plastic), gold, Red-gray, SST
all here except red-glass contain clot activators that could interfere with other samples for testing
Green or light green tubes
because the heparin will not interfere with with EDTA tubes
Lavender tubes
with EDTA, which can affect calcium and potassium levels if drawn before other tubes
Gray tubes
last to avoid contamination of tubes for electrolyte and enzyme testing
All other colored tubes are typically drawn after
Needle Disposal
Activate needle safety device immediately after removing the needle from the arm
Dispose of the needle and tube holder intact into a closable, sealable, puncture resistant, leak proof container
container must be labeled and clearly marked for BIOHAZARD DISPOSAL
