Typical antipsychotics

They work on visual hallucinations, auditory hallucinations, incoherent speech and aggression.

Lowers the level of dopamine in the body. This causes hypersensitivity to decrease, making the patient feel calm (the drug acts as a sedative).
Examples include: Fluphenazine, Chlorpromazine and Haloperidol.
Symptoms include: Increased heart rate, weight gain, blurred vision and tremors.

Atypical antipsychotics

They were first used to treat patients who suffered from heart attacks, but doctors soon discontinued its use after discovering that this drug thinned the blood of patients. Instead the drugs were used to treat mental disorders as they were thought to be effective when treating these symptoms.

Side effects include: Weight gain, restless leg, elevated triglycerides and an inability to absorb insulin.
People taking these drugs have to be seen by a doctor every 6 months to make sure their blood isn't thinning.
