Raising Awareness on the Destination of Waste (Client/Target Audience…
Raising Awareness on the Destination of Waste
The destination of our waste in Hong Kong
Plastics
Plastics generally go to the landfill
Only a small percentage is recycled
A lot of plastic ends up in the ocean because they get flushed into storm drains because people often take one use plastic objects such as plastic utensils and just throw them on the side of the road
Paper
Recycling plants
Generally landfills
If the recyling plants reach maximum capacity the paper goes to landfills
Food
Landfill
Incenerators
Produces CO2
Paper dispensers like these could help make people more aware of their trash usage and could encourage people to use less to save the environment
This concept could also be used on other objects such as straw dispenser that dispenses the straw through the head of a turtle or sea creaure to raise awareness on the destination of plastic waste
In our school, this concept could be used for A4 paper as well if they were positioned next to paper recycling bins to encourage people still use the paper even if they printed something onto one side of it.
Why do people generate so much waste in the first place
Lack of awareness
Don't care. For example our schools has stacks and stacks of clean paper next to every printer, diminishing the need or want for us to recycling or care too much about throwing the paper away.
Some people believe that just because something is thrown in to a recycling bin the waste will always be recycled as sometimes the object can't such as plastic bags
Client/Target Audience
Students at my school because most of us are unaware of the destination of our waste
People who work in offices as they often use a lot of paper
An ideal client would be a student or person working in the environmental protection or sustainability groups such as CCAs.
The general public would also be good as I would be able to influence and raise awareness on the destination of trash towards more people
Products to raise awareness on the destination of waste
Trash cans in our school could be fitted with clear plastic covers to with some mechanism for example a pressure plate inside the trash bin that can tell us how much trash is going to the landfill which can raise awareness on the destination of waste.
Straw dispensers could be modified represent the ocean to raise awareness that most straws end up in landfills and the ocean and can cause large amounts of damage and harm to the sea creatures when eaten
