Merchants can be: blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, bakers, and butchers
they imported goods from France and traded these goods

They eventually went further west

Means runner of the woods
They worked independently for themselves
At first the government encouraged it, but soon it became illegal, but the bois did not stop, they traded when every they could
It means that men used to run in the forest looking for trade in new france
“Farmers”
Seigneurs
Someone who owned large plots of land
Most seigneurs were men, but women could be a seigneur as well
received the land as grants from the King
To keep their land they had to recruit settlers (habitants) to farm it
Habitants
Farmers that lived on seigneuries
In exchange for the right to establish a farm, habitants had to clear the land, plant crops, and build a house
Some habitants neglected their farms because they found the fur trade an easier way to make a living
Seigneurs and Habitants sometimes ended up in court because of complaints that the habitants did not follow up on their obligations
Soldiers
Came to France to defend the Colony from the Haudenosaunee and the British
The King offered seigneuries to the military
Many men chose military career because the needed some way to make a living
The King wanted Military men to settle in new france
