they were blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, bakers, and butchers

sold their goods for a higher income to other colonists

the Merchants bought fur from them

they did this so they can find First Nations to trade with

"Coureur de Bois" means Runner of the Woods

most joined the military to be able to make a living

the King wanted the military

many soldiers came to New France to protect the colonies from the British and the Haudenosaunee
