        Veterans went to Standing Rock to stand up for what they believe in. Many felt taken advantage of by the government after having served in the military in a war based in oil and corporate interest, and they used this partly as an opportunity to grow and partly as an opportunity to help the Indigenous people who asked for support.

        A lot of being an Ally is being present in moments when help is asked for and staying out of the way when the community is confiding in itself. A lot of the complexities that come of of allyship are that allies feel the need to speak on behalf of Indigenous communities, when what they need to do is hold the space so the indigenous community can speak for themselves.
