Chapter 7
People Would Rather Be Electrically Shocked - This article introduces the idea that the majority of people do not like being alone with their own thoughts. The results of a study discussed in this article states that the majority of participants would choose to inflict pain on themselves rather than just sit there quietly and think.
Meditation Exercise - This exercise was very helpful in increasing mindfulness. By engaging in exercises like this one, I was able to be more aware of everything around me than I usually am throughout the day. It also allowed me to be more aware of my own body, breathing, and posture.
Chapter 3
Marvel App - For this assignment we came up with a concept for an app that would connect our community in a new and creative way. I decided to make an app that would help students eat healthier, and connect with others who wanted to do so. My app was called Dorm & Dash. This gave students healthy alternatives to smoothies and shakes that were easy for them to make in their dorms. It also connected students based on their contact list, the people in their dorm, or by similar taste.
Chapter 1
Technological Determinism is a view which means that technology shapes society. This term most likely came from an American sociologist and economist named Thorstein Velben. Karl Marx, a German philosopher and economist, influenced the idea of determinism significantly
Social shaping of technology is the counter argument for technological determinism. In this view of technology and society, it is believed that social changes technology, opposed to technological determinists who believe technology changes society. The two main influences on this topic are actor-network theory(ANT) and social construction of technology(SCOT). Some view SCOT as flawed because it doesn't acknowledge the social influence of technology.
Chapter 6
The Social Debate - This article discusses how technology can keep us in contact with people almost constantly. If people take advantage of that and spend so much time online trying to maintain virtual connections, they may lose their real life connections in the process. Larry Rosen argues that technology is making us less sociable, while Keith Hampton argues that it is making us more sociable. We have access to so much information and there is also much more that could go wrong with that information, than right. By limiting the time spent on social media, people would be able to have more genuine and real relationships in their lives.
Chapter 4
Film Analysis - For this assignment we analyzed the movie Her by illustrating a formalist, realist, or a contextualist analysis. I chose to do a formalist analysis. This means that I looked at how the story was told by discussing flashbacks, foreshadowing, and cinematography.
Film Theory and Analysis - This article discussed how there are different ways to analysis a film. It talk about how some films try to influence the audience to believe their point of view, and others allow for discussion and interpretation from their audience. Different theories and approaches of analyzing a film allow for different aspects of that film to be evaluated. After reading this article I thought that a contextualist approach was the most interesting because it makes the viewer look at the film as a part of something bigger.
Chapter 8
Mindfulness Project - This is a project that we were working on throughout the entire semester. The purpose of this project was to increase our awareness of our personal dependency on our smartphones, and to hopefully create change in our bad habits.
Deep Fakes are a way to manipulate audio or video content in order to make it seem like someone said or did something that they did not. These can be very dangerous if they are used for more than just a funny video. People are able to manipulate what people are saying, such as the President, and make others believe they said something that they did not.
Chapter 2
Google Knowing - This article discusses how people take social media and the internet for granted sometimes. The term Google-Knowing can be described as a way to obtain information or knowledge from the internet. One of the main points discussed in this article is the fact that most people trust everything they read or see on the internet. There are many advantages and disadvantages to social media, and false news is one of the biggest disadvantages on the internet.
Chapter 5
The Internet Debate - This article introduced three different arguments by Nicholas Carr, Clay Shirky, and William Poundstone. Carr argued that the internet makes us dumber, while Shirky argued that it makes us relatively smarter. Poundstone didn't agree or disagree with either of these arguments. He introduced the idea that the internet is simply making us ignorant. The internet and social media gives us the opportunity to make us smarter or dumber, but it is up to the person to decide what they do with the information they read, and whether to believe it or not.
